There is no feud between former fighter and trainer Ryan Garcia and Hall of Fame coach Joe Goossen.
garcia Split Goosen fought three bouts after a knockout loss to Gervonta Davis last year before teaming up with Derrick James.
On April 20th, the underdog Garcia defeated Devin Haney three times to win by majority decision. But victory is surrounded by things like: controversy.
Garcia was 3.2 pounds overweight for the 140-pound bout, and tests on May 1 revealed that Garcia tested positive for the banned performance-enhancing substance ostarine on the day of the fight and the day before.
Haney has since I was demanded to The New York State Athletic Commission announced that Garcia would be disqualified.
Garcia he has maintained his innocence He is awaiting the results of his B sample, and his former coach Goossen is rooting for him.
“I have known Ryan since he was a teenager and I have nothing but great things to say about him because he has a great heart,” Goossen told BoxingScene. “He's one of the best fighters I've ever trained. He's too talented to be funny. He's got it all.
“I trained Ryan two years in a row and I never saw anything close to the same galaxy that is being talked about now. It was never even talked about. There is no way Ryan would do something like that intentionally. When he trained with me he was committed. He always worked hard. There is no way I could even think about Ryan and speculate something in that direction. It's outrageous. Something is not right. I can't blame Ryan. None of it makes sense to me. It is beyond my imagination that Ryan Garcia would intentionally do something that would jeopardize his career in that way.”
Goosen guided Garcia to wins over Emmanuel Tagoe and Javier Fortuna, but Garcia was unable to defeat southpaw Davis.
Goosen believes Garcia's future is bright once he gets back into fighting mode.
“Ryan doesn't lose to right-handed players,” Goossen said. “He's going to be a great athlete at 147 pounds because he doesn't have to work like hell to lose weight. He's tall and big. The way he hits a baseball bat or a football bat is amazing. He's almost terrifying. He's one of the fastest, smartest, most powerful hitters I've ever played against.”
