ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Joaquin Buckley wants to fight in St. Louis.
And Buckley (18-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) should be the main event if he fights in St. Louis.
Following his win over Vicente Luque at Boardwalk Hall at UFC on ESPN 54, Buckley immediately landed an incredible shot.
“That's the plan,” Buckley told reporters, including MMA Junkie. “We have to talk to the UFC and see what they say, but yeah, we hope to be able to fight (in St. Louis) in May.”
The promotion announced Saturday that the official main event will be Houston's Derrick Lewis vs. Brazil's Rodrigo Nascimento. The May 11 event at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis already has a local flavor, with appearances from Michael Johnson, Charles Johnson and Sean Woodson, but Buckley wants to add to it. I'm thinking about it, but there's only one condition.
“They're going to change things,” Buckley said. “If I fought in St. Louis, they would have to change the date and put me in the main event. Five rounds.”
Co-main event vs. Luque (MMA 22-10-1, 15-6) UFC), Buckley campaigned for a big matchup when he name-dropped the likes of Luque, Kevin Holland and Ian Machado-Galley. However, Buckley is biting his tongue regarding this match.
“I'm not going to shout, but when I say I want to fight anybody, that's what I want to do. Everyone ranked above me,” Buckley said. “Now I'm starting to get a little boogie. At first, when I was making calls like this, everyone was saying, 'You're out of rank.' Now I'm trying to make the same excuse (to others). ”
