With one of the top freshman recruiting numbers in the Big Ten Conference and all of college football, Rutgers football is certainly trending in the right direction, according to two national college football analysts who cover the Big Ten Conference.
Appearing on Stadium Streaming Network's “Red Corner, Blue Corner,” former Ohio State linebacker Joshua Perry and Michigan tight end Jake Butt spoke about the Rutgers freshman year.
When asked if he was surprised that Rutgers coach Greg Schiano had landed one of the top freshmen in the country, Butt said he wasn't surprised.
Butt, who is also an analyst for the Big Ten Network, sees the freshmen as a boost for Rutgers, saying, “This is a very dangerous team.” Rutgers finished 7-6 last year (3-6 in the Big Ten) and beat Miami in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl.
“Rutgers is an easy opponent to get, a punching bag for people who don't follow college football as a whole, but if you watch the tape, especially last year, they were a good football team, they still are, they're a tough, disciplined team,” Butt said at the stadium.
“It would be surprising. I can't say that about the entire conference or even college football in general. If you look at their two toughest opponents, they were in the fourth quarter against Michigan, fourth down and two yards down. They missed their chances against Ohio State, but if they had taken them, the game could have gone very differently.”
“JP finished the season with a 7-6 record after the bowl game. ESPN had them as the fourth-toughest schedule in the nation. OK? They finished the season with eight of their opponents having bowl records. That's pretty amazing. Yeah, that's good for a lot of teams, but it's good for the guys Schiano will be playing at Rutgers. I think he's a great coach. He's very honest with his players and he shares that in his coaching meetings.”
In rankings updated Saturday, On3 ranks Rutgers among the top 10 classes in the country. Rivals and 247Sports also rank Rutgers among the top 10 classes in the country.
