UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev explains why he's open to defending his belt against Dustin Poirier.
Last weekend at UFC 299, Dustin Poirier scored a stunning knockout victory over Benoit Saint-Denis. The veteran overcame some early adversity to get it done in the second round, cementing himself as a true contender once again at 155 pounds.

Of course, he is interested in a showdown with Islam Makhachev. However, with a small number of other fighters participating, and four of them competing at UFC 300, some questioned whether this was really possible.
However, the Islamic side has made it clear that it is interested. In a recent interview, he explained why.
Makhachev wants Poirier
“We know Dustin doesn't deserve to fight for the title, but we don't have a choice at the moment,” Makhachev said. “Everyone's busy. I want to fight. I want to fight three times this year. I have to call someone and Poirier is available right now. He put in a great performance and scored a great knockout. He's currently free. Since he is healthy, I asked him to play in June.”
“Nobody (else) will be ready,” Makhachev said. “Maybe someone will prepare me, but I have to fight. I don't care. I'm healthy now and training every day, but I need someone.
“He's beaten a lot of top fighters. He's a legend. A fight with him would be good for me, good for history, good for everything. He's a legend. He's beaten a lot of tough guys. He beat guys. He's a tough opponent, too. He's got a good guillotine.”
