Islam Makhachev has confirmed he was offered a superfight with Leon Edwards at UFC 300.
The historic UFC 300 takes place on Saturday, April 13th at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada.
Now, it has now been revealed that current UFC lightweight champion Makhachev was offered the chance to fight Edwards for the welterweight title, but turned down the opportunity.
Current welterweight champion Leon Edwards (22-3 MMA) last fought Colby Covington (17-4 MMA) at UFC 296 last December.
Makhachev confirmed the news in an interview with “MMA Junkie'':
“Right now it's impossible, because we're in Ramadan. It's a month-long fasting period, and you can't practice during Ramadan. It's very difficult. You have to fast when the sun rises, and you have to fast all day long. ”
Ramadan begins on March 12th and ends on April 9th, just four days before UFC 300.
Continuing, Dagestan stated:
“I have five or six hours to eat. This training is very hard. I asked Ali (Abdelaziz) if we could postpone UFC 300 for about two weeks, but I'm ready. , he said it was impossible.”
Finally, the 32-year-old shared his disappointment in turning down the opportunity to become a double champion (h/t MMAMAnia):
“This was a dream fight for me. I'm very upset because I have a lot of chances to fight at UFC 300. It's a big fight for my second belt against Leon Edwards, which is important. But this time I missed that chance and I'm honestly very upset… I hope that one day they will call me again.”
Islam Makhachev (25-1 MMA) has not fought since October 2023, when he knocked out Alexander Volkanovskiy (26-4 MMA) at UFC 294.
Makhachev, who has won 13 straight fights in the Octagon, is still waiting for his next opponent.
