Nine teams of Texas Tech University performers representing various countries showcased their musical talents Saturday in the Tech Allen Theater in the Student Union.
Sponsored by International Affairs and Student Housing and hosted by Students for Global Connections, the Worldwide Showcase featured individual and group performances representing Bangladesh, Nepal, Uganda, Palestine, South Korea, India, Japan, and Egypt. Ta.
This year's winners were selected by the audience as well as the jury. Bangladesh Students and Scholars Association won the Audience Choice Award.
“We performed a traditional Bangladeshi wedding ceremony,” said Lazy Meloz Min, an ABSS member from Bangladesh.
Maimul Haque, a friend of ABSS members, said that although the actual wedding ceremony can take several days, the group was able to condense it for the performance to highlight the most important points. Ta.
“Today's weddings are influenced by Western culture and other cultures,” Hawk says. “It's like an old-fashioned traditional wedding.”
The group award went to Miziki African Ensemble representing Uganda. They performed traditional African music and dance while playing African instruments.
The individual category award was won by Mae Gil from the Japanese national team. Gil sang and Rose Kalili, a performance and math double major, played piano.
SGC advisor Kathleen Cade said the event was a great opportunity for students to learn about different cultures from other countries.
“We welcome domestic and international students to come and showcase their culture through dance and music,” Cade said. “This gives Texas Tech an opportunity to remind us that we are here and that we are an important part of our community.”
ABSS won $300 in addition to the award, and Miziki African Ensemble and Gill each won $500 for their performance wins.
