Indiana Fever guard Christy Wallace received some exciting news over the weekend: The WNBA veteran learned she will be joining Australia's team for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Wallace, a native of Loganholm, Queensland, Australia, couldn't believe the news when he got a call from Australian national team coach (and New York Liberty coach) Sandy Brondello. The Fever guard recounted the story during a press conference on Tuesday.
“When Sandy called me that morning, I was just bawling my eyes out and that's how the call ended,” Wallace said. “It was a really special moment.”
Representing your country at the Olympics is a dream for any athlete, and for Wallace, it's a truly special opportunity.
Wallace will enter her second season with the Fever in 2024. In Indiana's first 21 games of the WNBA season, she is averaging 5.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 37.7 percent from the field.
Wallace becomes the fifth player in franchise history to compete in the Olympics, joining Natalie Achonwa (Canada, 2016), Tallie Bevilacqua (Australia, 2008), Tamika Catchings (USA, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016) and Kara Walters (USA, 2000).
Prior to her WNBA career, Wallace played college basketball at Baylor University from 2014-2018. During her four-year career with the Bears, she averaged 8.9 points, 3.9 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game.
Wallace was selected 16th overall by the Atlanta Dream in the 2018 WNBA Draft, but it wasn't until the 2022 season with the Dream that the guard made her WNBA debut.
Wallace appeared in 66 games over his first two seasons in the league, averaging 6.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
