India defeated New Zealand 3-2 in their first match and it was captain Harmanpreet who scored a penalty kick in the dying seconds of the match to help India kick off their Olympic campaign with a win.
The Asian giants played with aggressive intent and put the New Zealand side under pressure with an aggressive approach towards goal, with PR Sreejesh also producing some fine saves at goal to keep India in the match. Despite conceding an early goal, the Indian players did not let their guard down and fought back strongly to secure a vital point.
Argentina, ranked seventh in the world, began their Olympic campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Australia and will be looking to secure their first win and pose a major threat to a confident Indian team.
India started strongly in Pool B, which also includes Olympic champions Belgium, Australia, Ireland and Argentina, with goals from Mandeep Singh (24th minute), Vivek Sagar Prasad (34th minute) and Harmanpreet Singh (59th minute).
Meanwhile, the Indian hockey team showed a never-give-up mentality against New Zealand, coming back twice in the 60-minute match to clinch the title.
The match, played in front of a packed crowd at the Yves du Manoir Stadium, was enthralling from the get-go. India dominated the first quarter, dominating possession and causing New Zealand problems early on with their attacking flurry led by Olympic debutant Abhishek, who fired some excellent shots at goal only for New Zealand goalkeeper Dominic Dixon to make some powerful saves.
In the final minutes of the second half, Sukhjit Singh's clever play earned him a penalty corner which led to another set-piece move. The second penalty corner was awarded to India after Harmapreet's drag flick hit Child's body, giving India a penalty stroke. The Indian captain made no mistake to secure an important win for his team.
“The first match of the Olympics is never easy. New Zealand are not an easy team. We made some mistakes but we also had some good things. It's a good wake-up call,” Sreejesh said. “We got three points and that's what matters. We gave them chances and they took them. The last few minutes were not easy but that's always the case in hockey. It's tense from the first whistle to the last minute,” he said.
