With the Olympics fast approaching, final qualifying rounds for the U.S. swimming, track and field and gymnastics teams will be held in late June.
The swimming preliminaries begin on Saturday and will run through June 23. The preliminaries will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, which will be a historic moment as it will mark the first time that the preliminaries have been held in a football stadium.
Illinois and the Midwest have a strong group of athletes vying for spots on the team, including some Olympic veterans looking to return for a chance to win a medal.
Below is a list of Illinois athletes who may compete in the 2024 Paris Games.
Ryan Murphy
Murphy, a Palos Heights native, is a returning Olympic swimmer who specializes in the backstroke and has won four Olympic gold medals. He competed in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games and has qualified for the Paris Games.
Olivia Smoglia
The 29-year-old Olympian from Glenview specializes in backstroke and freestyle. He has won gold and bronze medals in previous Olympic Games and is aiming to compete in his third Olympic Games this year.
Leah Hayes
Eighteen-year-old world championship bronze medalist Leah Hayes is looking to compete in her first Olympic Games this year. Hayes, a Sugar Grove native who swims for the Fox Valley Park District Riptides, is ranked No. 1 in the state and has already committed to the University of Virginia.
Annika Park
Park, a Deerfield native, has committed to Stanford University and is ranked No. 2 in the state for her class. The 18-year-old will be swimming in hopes of making her first Olympic team.
Garrett Klassen
Klassen is an Aurora native who swam at the University of Chicago and has appeared in three NCAA Division III finals.
Jeffrey Ho
Willowbrook alum Jeffrey Hou also plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania and is ranked No. 2 in the Illinois class of 2024.
Kevin Houseman
Hausman is a graduate student at Northwestern University and an NCAA champion in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Connor Morikawa
Morikawa, a Northwestern University swimmer, also qualified for the Olympic Trials for the first time this year and recently won the 100m breaststroke final at the Indy May Cup.
Alex Lakin
Lakin is from Naperville and is ranked No. 4 in the class of 2023. He attended Naperville Central High School and currently plans to attend Oakland University.
Luke Maurer
Maurer, a Wilmette native and now a senior on the Stanford University swimming team, is a 12-time All-American heading into the preliminaries.
Quinn Ciner
Siner currently swims at the University of Wyoming but is originally from Woodstock, Ill. He is a junior specializing in freestyle, butterfly and backstroke.
Charlie Tracy
A Chicago native, Tracy is currently committed to the University of Notre Dame, ranked ninth in the state, previously attended St. Ignatius College Prep and swims for the Chicago Wolfpack Aquatic Club.
Tyler Bardock
Bardach is ranked No. 2 in the Illinois Class of 2025 and is a native of Naperville. He currently plays for Fox Valley Swim Club.
Elizabeth Nawrocki
Nawrocki is from Aurora and plans to attend the University of Georgia. She will specialize in breaststroke.
Bridget McGann
McGann, a native of Earlville, Illinois, plans to attend the University of Wisconsin and compete in the 100-meter breaststroke at the Trials.
Grace Koenig Song
Koenig-Song, a Chicago native who currently swims for the NASA Wildcats, is looking to make her first Olympic team and is considered one of the fastest 13-year-old swimmers in the country.
Grant Bocheneski
Bocheneski, a University of Missouri swimmer, is a Naperville native who broke several records at the university, including the fastest time in the 100-meter backstroke.
Brady Johnson
Johnson is from West Chicago and is ranked No. 1 in the state of Illinois in the class of 2024. He won the 50 backstroke at this year's NCSA Spring Championships and is committed to the University of Arizona.
Justin Murdoch
Murdock is a junior at Northwestern University from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He is 21 years old and will be competing in his second Olympic Trials.
Tierney Lenahan
Lenahan, a Wilmette native, is currently committed to Duke University, where she is ranked No. 1 in the state of Illinois for the class of 2025.
Vera Connick
Connick is ranked No. 1 in Illinois for the class of 2026. She is a 16-year-old who is a standout in the club at Palatine.
Diego Nosak
Nosak, a freshman swimmer at Northwestern University, will be competing in the Trials for the first time this year. He is from Oregon and is ranked No. 1 in the state for the class of 2027.
Braden Capen
Capen, just 14 years old and from Naperville, qualified in the 200 backstroke.
Stuart Seymour
Seymour, a Northwestern University swimmer, qualified for the Olympic trials for the first time this year, competing in the 50-meter freestyle at the Illinois NASA Spring Blast-Off in May.
Charlie Bufton
Bufton is a New Trier graduate and Wilmette native who attended Northwestern University before going on to North Carolina State University.
Alek Filipovic
Alex Filipovic, a St. Charles native, will compete at the Olympic Trials again after competing in the 2021 Olympic Trials. Filipovic is currently a swimmer at the University of Texas at Austin.
Anna Peplowski
Peplowski, currently a junior at Indiana University, is a native of Germantown Hills, Illinois, and qualified to compete in the preliminary round for the second time this year.
Josh Bay
This is the first time that Junior National Team member Bay, a Hinsdale native, has qualified for the Trials. He is currently ranked No. 1 in the state in the 2025 class.
Connor Boyle
University of Virginia swimmer Connor Boyle, a product of the Fox Valley swim team in Naperville, competed at the trials in 2021 and is back for his second shot at making the Olympic team.
