As the saying goes, “Sometimes luck is better than luck.”
On Friday night, Huff was both.
In the return game of the “Battle of the Huskies” series, Sarah Funderburk scored enough points in the second half for a 1-0 victory over Heritage.
Strong play from the back line in the final 20 minutes of the game helped the home-standing Huskies improve to 16-1-1 on the season.
Huff's attack was relentless when needed, and Heritage keeper Audrey Hatch was in pursuit most of the night.
If he could aim for the back of the goal, it felt like Funderburg's fingerprints would be all over the goal. A big run in the first half nearly gave way to the ice early on.
54 minutes into the game, senior Huff attempted to send the ball to Mary Wonder in the box. The cross first hit the head of a Heritage defender, then the foot of another defender before deflecting into the net and resulting in an own goal.
Landry Boyles helped Heritage counter in the final 20, but Riley Pickels got the mitt on the Huskies' best scoring opportunity of the night.
Heritage tried to fight back from a 1-0 deficit, but couldn't create many scoring chances as the game drew to a close. Huff was able to get the ball in the attacking third in the final three minutes, securing the victory.
Last season, Heritage defeated Hough on its home turf. In 2024, fortunes reversed, as Huff scored his 13th win in his last 14 tries.
With this loss, Heritage dropped to 11 wins, 4 losses, and 4 draws. Huff will host Mallard Creek, Harding and Apex Friendship next week.
