LUBBOCK, Texas (NEWS RELEASE) – Texas Tech University is inviting art lovers, history buffs, and military enthusiasts from all over the South Plains to the opening of its newest exhibit on university grounds on Thursday, May 9th at 6 p.m. Invite home. campus.
“History on Canvas: Revisiting the Buffalo Soldiers” is a moving series of works by the late Texas artist and war hero Bob Sneed depicting the all-black 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments of the U.S. Army in the 19th century. The exhibit, scheduled to run through mid-December 2024, features 30 original acrylic paintings and pen-and-ink drawings, each depicting another important piece of America's storied history. Painstakingly researched to provide a unique and timeless window into the retelling of the chapter.
This exhibition marks the second time in more than 35 years that many of these works have been exhibited together.
The gallery talk will be given by Bob Snead's daughter Karen Partey, a 1994 Texas Tech University graduate and current chair of the Texas Commission on the Arts, at 6:30 p.m.
Sneed served in the U.S. Army for more than 30 years, joining at age 19 and retiring in 1982 as a chief warrant officer. The highly decorated, double-rated combat aviator served his four tours of duty in Vietnam with the following accomplishments: Other commendations include 41 Aviation Medals, 3 Purple Hearts, 3 Vietnam Crosses of Valor with Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars with V Device, and Master Aviator Badge.
A self-taught cartoonist and artist, Snead studied at the Chouinard Museum in Los Angeles, California, and the University of Mainz in Mainz, Germany, while stationed in Vicenza, Italy, with Italian Impressionist painter Salviano Constantin. . In 1982.
Sneed made a name for himself in his post-retirement career as a noted historian of the Buffalo Soldiers. Snead is known throughout Texas for his 50 years of research and his once-obscure visual retrospective of the 19th century military. Sneed's research led to the development of his seminal body of work entitled “.100 Years Ago: The Buffalo Soldiers Revisited. ” The Buffalo Soldiers were African-American soldiers who served in the U.S. Army after the Civil War, and their contributions to American history are celebrated in Sneed's powerful and evocative artwork. The complete collection of 167 pieces has toured the world multiple times, and several original works in the exhibit are currently on display in private collections throughout the United States and at the Texas Governor's Mansion.
The exhibits on display at Texas Tech University include Snead's foundational work “''.Buffalo Soldier.” It is known as the first painting in the collection. He was originally painted in 1968 when Snead was on his first tour of duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Army.
