Sadie Cosman did not allow the puck in the shootout, Emmy Sibley scored the game-winning goal in the seventh round, and the Hingham Girls Hockey (HGH) U10 Red Team defeated Waltham 2-1 to advance to the Massachusetts Girls 10U Tier. The company expanded to III state tournament championship game Sunday at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.
After a thrilling rendition of the national anthem by Boston Bruin singer Todd Angilly, Waltham took the lead with a power-play goal at the 8:24 mark of the second period. Hingham's Madison Newman then tied it with 2:27 left in the second period on an assist from Ainsley Matthews. Regular time ended in a 1-1 tie.
A thrilling overtime period nearly ended the game for both teams, but no goals were scored in the ensuing shootout as Sadie Cosman blocked all seven Waltham shooters. Emmy Sibley completed Hingham's miraculous run to its first state championship with a powerful wrist shot into the top corner over the Waltham goalie's left shoulder in the seventh round.
“This was a really special team that grew every week throughout the season. They've come a long way and peaked at just the right time,” said HGH U10 Red Head Coach Whit Matthews. “Goaltender Sadie Cosman was outstanding in all five games. Her performance on Sunday was a dream come true. First, a shutout win in the morning semifinals. Then in the championship game. She stopped every shot in overtime and then every seven consecutive shootout attempts. She was a brick wall.”
The U10 Red team consisted of players from left to right. Emmy Sibley, Adare Jiranek, Fiona Carli, Grace Bigelow, Tess Merrill, Brooke Lewis, Sadie Cosman, Ainsley Matthews, Elle O'Brien, Mikayla McGrath (Scituate), Ellie Jennison, Lexi Moravec (Cohasset), Madison Newman (Scituate), Delaney Johnson, Claire Wheelihan, Tegan Gill. Coached by Whit Matthews, Lee Jennison, Brian Lewis, and Kevin Gill.
“Overcoming adversity has been a developmental theme for our team throughout the season. The girls competed in several elimination games and went undefeated in all of them, often in dramatic fashion. We came from behind to win,” said HGH U10 Red Ast coach Kevin Gill. “It was only fitting that we overcame even more deficit in the state championship final and won in overtime and a seven-round shootout!”
The Hingham Girls Hockey program is comprised of several age levels: Learn to Play, U8, U10, U12, U14, and U19 groups.
Girls interested in joining the program are encouraged to take part in an assessment starting next Monday, March 25th. Complete evaluation details are available at https://www.hinhamgirlshockey.org/evaluations.
