Capoeira is a martial art originating from Brazil that combines self-defense techniques with dance.
The Brazilian Cultural Foundation (BCF) and Axe Capoeira Comox Valley will celebrate 15 years of Afro-Brazilian culture in the Comox Valley with intercultural celebrations, batizados and troco de corda events.
The celebration will take place across multiple venues over the weekend of March 15-17, 2024, for both registered participants and the general public.
Led by Axé Capoeira Comox Valley leader Professor Onça (Alicia Fennell), Batizado and Troca de Corda attracted over 120 participants from across British Columbia. Participating Axé Capoeira students had the opportunity to learn from 18 international guest instructors from across Canada, the United States and Brazil, including six Capoeira Masters. On Sunday, students will showcase their dance and musical talents as well as compete against one of the masters to be awarded their next Capoeira belt. L'école Au-cœur-de-l'île in Comox welcomes spectators from noon onwards.
Axé Capoeira Comox Valley also hosts introductory family-friendly community classes to teach the basics of capoeira to the public. Interested parties can stop by école Au-cœur-de-l'île on Saturday at 2pm.
“Cultural events like this are so important to any community because they bring a sense of unity and enrich our lives in so many ways,” Fennell said. “They also help lift underprivileged artists out of poverty and connect them to communities that greatly need their culture and ancestral knowledge. Indigenous cultures are known to be healing and transformative.”
The Brazilian Cultural Foundation recognizes that these events would not have been possible without the generous support of community partners and donors.
The Brazilian Cultural Foundation deeply appreciates all support from the community and respectfully acknowledges that we live and work on the unceded traditional territory of the Comox First Nation.
(Tickets for Saturday night's cultural exchange between the Kumugwe Cultural Association and the Brazilian Cultural Foundation are sold out.)
