Things turned violent when the two agreed to meet at the Olympic Village to conduct a Facebook Marketplace exchange.
A Vancouver man facing two counts of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the double stabbing at the Olympic Village on Boxing Day 2023 may soon plead guilty, court documents say. It was revealed.
Sheldon Sefle Ilbegi Asli has been charged in connection with the stabbings of two good Samaritans who witnessed an alleged robbery, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) said.
Ilbegi Asli was scheduled to appear in Vancouver District Court on April 15.
The incident began around 7:40 p.m. when the two agreed to meet at the Olympic Village to conduct a Facebook Marketplace exchange.
The seller, a 36-year-old Vancouver resident, believed he was meeting a legitimate buyer. The transaction turned violent as the suspected buyer used pepper spray and attempted to flee without paying for the items.
At that time, numerous witnesses stood up and cornered the suspect, subduing him until VPD officers arrived.
Sergeant Steve Addison said the injured witnesses were delivering food at the time of the alleged robbery and saw the suspect passing over a person calling for help and attempting to flee into a nearby taxi. He said he did.
He said the two men prevented him from getting into a taxi, pursued him with the help of a third witness, and held him down until police arrived with handcuffs.
One food delivery worker was stabbed in the hand and another was stabbed in the shoulder while trying to stop the suspect from fleeing. Both men were treated at a hospital.
The case has been on hold since Vancouver District Court Judge Gregory Rideout sent Ilbegi Asli to an addiction treatment center in February.
