In professional sports, the New Jersey Devils do more than just score goals on the ice. They are also passionate about serving the community, especially through their partnership with Hockey New Jersey (HNJ).
Founded in 2003, HNJ is dedicated to bringing the fun of hockey to kids who don't have the means to play. Based at Newark's Ironbound Recreation Center and supported by the Devils and his NHL Hockey is forEveryone™ initiative, it gives kids from all walks of life the chance to lace up their skates and hit the ice. I am.
What makes HNJ special is not only that they teach the game itself. It's their belief that hockey can be a game changer for these kids. It's about instilling life skills, promoting academic success, and fostering friendships that last a lifetime.
What really sets HNJ apart is the personal touch from the Devils players themselves. NHL pros take time out of their busy schedules to play with kids, share their wisdom, and just have fun on the ice. If you watch the videos posted on social media, you can see that kids love this game a lot. Whether it's a practice session or a community event, having Devils players like the Hughes brothers by your side is a true game changer.
Speaking of the Hughes brothers, Jack started helping out with the organization a few years ago, working with Bauer to make sure all the kids had equipment. “I went to their rink in Newark, and a relationship was built from there,” says Jack. “We were able to take them to games, give them jerseys, and meet some people, so I think it was really good.” He is committed to creating memories and connections for the kids. I am doing my best.
The recent Playing it Forward celebration was a standout moment. Jack and Luke Hughes received well-deserved recognition for their dedication to the cause. After winning the Playing it Forward Award, HNJ announced the appointment of Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes as official ambassadors for his five-year term.
“Jack and Luke Hughes embody the values of commitment, leadership and community involvement,” said Jake Reynolds, director of the New Jersey Devils & Prudential Center. “Their passion for hockey and dedication to making a difference in the lives of others makes them excellent ambassadors for hockey in New Jersey.”
“Jack and Luke will play a pivotal role in expanding the reach of HNJ programs that support and empower socio-economically disadvantaged youth through their five-year commitment.” Hockey CEO Keith Bertol said.
Moments like this make me feel really proud to be a hockey fan. Seeing the smiles on the faces of the kids on the ice is everything, and knowing the Devils are supporting them warms my heart.
But it's not just about events and celebrations. It's also about everyday moments. It's about the small interactions between players and kids that may not make headlines but mean the world to those involved. Whether it's a high five after a good play or a word of encouragement during a difficult time, those are the moments that truly make a difference.
So hats off to the Devils for keeping the spirit of hockey alive in their jerseys. Through partnerships like HNJ, they are not only building stronger teams; They are building stronger communities.
