Set in New York City in 2014, the film follows Toni (Louis) as she searches for Elliott (Rhames), a former boxer and gym owner in rough-and-tumble Bushwick. Although Elliot initially refuses to train her, an unexpected bond develops between her unlikely pair that shatters her social, racial, and personal boundaries.
Years later, Toni, who became a pioneer in female boxing managers, was the first to hire Payne (Cooper).
Using the wisdom he learned from Elliott, he stakes everything, including the fate of his young daughter, in the championship battle.
