Planners said Grand Rapids could have an economic impact of more than $400 million if built.
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Grand Rapids is one step closer to building an 8,500-seat soccer stadium downtown.
The Grand Rapids Metropolitan Planning Commission on Thursday approved a rezoning for the stadium, which will be built near Lake Michigan Drive and Winter Avenue downtown. This is also around the site of the Downtown YMCA and Big Boy Restaurant.
Most of the site is currently used as a parking lot.
The special land use request was filed a little more than a month ago by Grand Action 2.0 Executive Director Kara Wood. At this time, the company also revealed plans to build a stadium.
Grand Action 2.0 has developed plans and secured funding for the stadium, and the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority (CAA) will own and operate the venue.
The project could cost up to $175 million, with plans to raise $115 million in public funding and $60 million from the private sector.
Planners said the city could have an economic impact of more than $400 million if built.
The original plan is for the first match to be held in the spring of 2026.
