The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk soccer team trained in Tipton on Monday and swept its River Valley Conference foes in two close games that were evenly matched by scores of 2-1. The night started with a shootout victory for the Mid-Prairie girls. The Hawks had freshman Samantha Wunderlich score her first goal of the year and her only regulation point in the first half. The score remained 1-0 Mid-Prairie from halftime until the end of the game, until Tipton tied it on a goal by Carly Langenberg for the final 10 minutes of the game. After regulation ended, both teams continued to play until overtime, which resulted in a penalty shootout. In the penalty shootout, Golden Hawk goaltender Niva Helmut shut the door on Tipton, stopping the first two shots and watching as the fourth hit the crossbar, while teammates Elise Gingerich, Lydia Beachy and Evangeline Marner calmly walked into the box and took a shot. The Golden Hawk girls fall to 6-3 on the year as Tipton falls to 2-4.
In the men's contest, all the fireworks went up in the first half of the Golden Hawk's victory. Mid-Prairie's Hugo Banuelos scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Tucker Miller, and Dylan Henry scored his first goal of the season as Banuelos' helper. The Tigers' goal was scored by Myles Christian off an assist from Max Rashmidt. In the second half, the Golden Hawk defense was led by a great performance by Joe Hall with 13 saves, preventing the Tigers from tying the game and giving them a one-point victory. The win improves Mid-Prairie to 6-4 overall and the Tigers to 5-2.
The Golden Hawk men's team will travel to Maquoketa on Friday, while the women's team will be in action on Monday when they take on Iowa City-Regina.
