The Baltimore native has the chance to make his Olympic dream come true by accepting an advisory role for Team USA. “As one of the best boxers in the world, Davis will be a key player in inspiring and supporting our team to achieve Olympic greatness and become the number one country in the world at this year's Games.” Matt Johnson, the high performance director for the United States Boxing Association, wrote a letter to the Baltimore judges, asking them to participate in the Paris Olympics in 2024. Davis is currently on probation for a hit-and-run incident that occurred in Baltimore in 2020. According to the Baltimore BannerThe 29-year-old boxer has been given permission to travel with the U.S. team to coach the squad of eight boxers who have qualified for the Paris Olympics. Davis will be in France from July 19 to August 12.
Formerly, Baltimore Circuit Judge Althea M. Handy Davis' lawyers requested the boxer provide specific details about his itinerary to Paris, but the lawyers did not provide it. Davis' lawyer, Hunter Pruett, from Baltimore, argued that the boxer was following the terms of his probation and should be allowed to travel. Thankfully, the legal issues have been resolved and Gervonta Davis will be traveling overseas to lead the U.S. national team and bring home a gold medal for his country.

But will Davis's boxing knowledge be useful to the Olympic team? There is a big difference between amateur and professional boxing. In the Olympics, a boxer has only three rounds to beat his opponent on points. The chances of a knockout are very low. Unlike Davis, a boxer cannot afford to wait for time before going for a KO punch in the later rounds. A boxer needs to be focused from the first goal to land a bigger punch than his opponent. Still, it will be interesting to see what strategy Davis will adopt for Team USA in their quest for the gold medal.
