The first round of the NFL Draft has been decided, with rounds two and three taking place tonight, and rounds four through seven on Saturday. Over the past few years, players like Jordan Mason, Juannie Thomas, and Tyler Davis have gone from being late picks/undrafted to making an impact on their teams. Will the Yellow Jackets be able to acquire such a player in this year's draft? They have a cornerback who played a lot of football in this draft and has the size the team wants at the position.
That's Miles Sims, who expects to hear his name called at some point this weekend.
According to PFF, Sims was the top-graded defender on Georgia Tech's defensive backs last season, scoring 74.7 points in 600 snaps. In coverage, Sims performed well in coverage with 74.9 points and in tackles he had 67.3 points. He helped himself at Georgia Tech's pro day by running the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds and the 20-yard shuttle in 4.25 seconds.
Last season, Sims started nine games as the primary starter at cornerback, recording 37 tackles, five passes defended and one interception. Sims is at his best when in man coverage, where he can use his size and length against opposing receivers.
At Georgia Tech's pro day, Sims shared his approach on how he's preparing for the NFL.
“Well, this is a new level and this isn't college, so I definitely had to go back to the drawing board and revise some of my goals, set new goals, and multiply it by 10. By doing so, I'm just making sure I'm doing my due diligence and paving the way for those who come after me. I know this is a new beginning, so I'm just giving new information. I'm very sponge-like when it comes to things, I'm very receptive to everything that comes my way, and I'm humble and willing to grow.”
He also talked about what he brings to the next level.
“I can definitely bring perseverance and determination, intelligence and intellect, and like I said, a passion to grow and develop.”
Sims is expected to join the team this weekend and will be worth watching closely. Sims can also play on special teams, so his case can also help build your roster.
