ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia State tied the game on solo home runs by freshman Tre Phelps in the top of the eighth and Colby Branch in the ninth, then Corey Collins hit a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the 10th to put the Bulldogs within three. The Bulldogs, ranked seventh in the nation, defeated Georgia Tech 8-6 on Sunday night to win the Athens Regional tournament and earn a berth in the Super Regional tournament.
Georgia Tech loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 10th. After the first two batters reached base, Layton Finley replaced Chandler Marsh. He allowed a single to Cam Jones and then struck out Drew Burress. Matthew Ellis then hit a sacrifice fly for the second out and John Giesler grounded out to get the third out.
Dylan Goldstein and Slate Alford scored in the first inning to give the Bulldogs (42-15) a 2-0 lead.
Georgia Tech (33-25) got one back in the bottom of the first when Burress tripled and scored on Ellis' single.
Van Lackey hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning and Giesler added a one-run single to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-2 lead.
Clayton Chadwick singled to lead off the fifth inning and scored on a Charlie Condon single to put Georgia within two. Condon is batting .445 this season and leads the nation with 36 home runs. His 61 home runs are the Bulldogs' all-time leader.
Georgia Tech defeated the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, 3-1, in the day's first consolation game. The Seahawks blasted the Yellow Jackets into the consolation game on Friday with a 9-0 rout.
Georgia has appeared in the College World Series six times, most recently finishing as runner-up in 2008. The Bulldogs have only won the championship since 1990.
Georgia Tech has appeared in the CWS three times, most recently in 2006. The Yellow Jackets were runners-up in 1994.
