The University of Georgia football team returns several key players on both the defensive and defensive end, but also has some new faces. One of the key players who left the team this offseason was Tykee Smith, who was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and starred for the Bulldogs last season. This leaves a void on the team that a young player could fill.
Defensive back Jonel Aguero is one of the players who could take over for the Bulldogs' star this season, and CBS sees him as having a breakout year. The sports news outlet released a list of sophomore breakout candidates, and Aguero was on it.
“Georgia has deep secondary talent to replace due to departures from the NFL and the transfer portal, including a vacancy at a star position that has produced stars such as Javon Bullard and Tykee Smith. There is still competition, but Aguero practiced with the Stars first team in the spring and started in Georgia's spring game. At 5-foot-11, it will be tough to keep Aguero off the field. The former star's development will be key for Georgia's entire defense,” CBS wrote.
Aguero was a five-star prospect coming out of high school and was the No. 2 safety in his class behind Ohio State's Caleb Downs. It remains to be seen who will star for Georgia State this season, but if Aguero takes the position, he'll have a great chance to have a breakout season.
