Georgia State football quarterback Carson Beck talks about the new helmet communication rules that will be implemented in college football for the 2024 season.
A lot has changed in college football over the past year, many of which will be in effect this season. The College Football Playoff has expanded to 12 teams, numerous teams have joined new conferences, and there have been some rule changes. One of the most notable changes is in-helmet communication during the game.
Teams will now be able to select players who can communicate with their coaches throughout the game before the ball is snapped, which means a lot especially for the quarterback position, as they will now have a fresh set of eyes to give them information before the snap and make sure everything is lined up properly.
Nola.com spoke with Manning Passing Academy quarterbacks about the matter, and Georgia quarterback Carson Beck gave his opinion. Here's what Beck had to say:
“You understand it, you listen, and as you're listening you can start to develop a defense. You're already one step ahead,” Beck said.
Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard echoed the sentiment, saying it was like stealing answers from a test. The ability to read and handle a defense is a big part of playing quarterback at the college level, and while that will still be a key factor, he could use some extra help from his offensive coordinator.
Beck is already considered one of the game's elite processors, with an excellent ability to not only accurately read what the defense is doing but also communicate that accurate information to other players, and now he'll have the ability to glean even more information from offensive coordinator Mike Bobo throughout the entire game leading up to the play.
The Georgia quarterback is expected to be one of the best players in college football and a candidate to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. With that comes a lot of pressure to perform, and the new rule should help alleviate some of the in-game pressure college quarterbacks feel all season.
