There are less than 100 days until the start of the 2024 college football season. The Georgia Bulldogs are the presumed No. 1 ranked team in the preseason polls following last season (13-1). The team is packed with talented football players, but there are also a few players who are under a lot of pressure.
Carson Beck, QB
Sure, Carson Beck, in his second year as a starter, checked off a lot of performance boxes last year. He completed 73% of his passes, led Georgia to the No. 1 third-down offense in the country, and averaged more than 40 points per game for just the third time in Georgia football's last 20 years. It was a good year. But there's a different kind of pressure in 2024. Coming into this season, he's projected to be the No. 1 QB in the next NFL draft, a front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, and a demand to win a national title. Last year, he wanted to prove he was good, but now he has to perform like a great player. There's a difference.
Xavier Torras, OL
Truss is entering his fifth season at Georgia. He was eligible to enter the NFL Draft this spring, but chose to return to Georgia for one more year. Now, he is expected to play as the starting right tackle this year. The pressure of starting is nothing new for Truss, but this is his last chance to improve his NFL Draft rating. Additionally, with talented players like Monroe Freeling and Jamaal Merriweather clamoring for playing time, he cannot afford to slip in terms of performance or playing time.
Lawson Lackey, T.E.
Lackey earned playing time as a freshman a year ago as the third tight end on the roster, then was quickly promoted to second when Brock Bowers was injured. Now as a sophomore, Lackey seemed poised to take a semi-starting role. Georgia's second-string tight ends have played significant minutes each year under Coach Smart, but this summer Georgia added Stanford tight end Benjamin Yurosek to the roster through the transfer portal, not to mention Jaden Redell and Colton Hinrich to the roster as well.
