Georgia Bulldogs football player Lara Thomas' lawyer responds after release from prison
Georgia Bulldogs football player Lara Thomas was released from jail on $3,500 bail on Tuesday, shortly after his lawyer spoke for the first time about the case.
“We are pleased that bail has been posted and Mr. Thomas has been released while we conduct a thorough investigation of the case,” Thomas' attorney, Kim Stevens, said in a statement. “We expect this matter will be resolved promptly and fairly once all the facts are known.”
According to public records, Thomas was arrested early last Friday morning on multiple domestic violence charges and was being held at the Athens-Clarke County Jail in Georgia.
The senior wide receiver was charged with child abuse/domestic violence, a second-degree felony, and two misdemeanor counts of assault/domestic violence.
He was jailed at 3:20 a.m. that night.
Georgia banned Thomas from the football team indefinitely, in accordance with university policy when an individual is charged with a felony.
This marks Thomas' second arrest since joining the Bulldogs football team from Mississippi State University in 2023.
According to ESPN, he was arrested by University of Georgia police in January of last year and charged with false imprisonment for allegedly confining and detaining a person “by standing in front of a dorm room door without lawful authority, blocking the exit and telling the person they could not leave.”
Those charges were dropped after an agreement was reached between Thomas' lawyers and prosecutors.
Thomas appeared in eight games for Georgia last season, catching 23 passes for 383 yards and one touchdown before missing three games with a foot injury.
