The Georgia Bulldogs and head coach Kirby Smart are being described as standard by one college football analyst.
For a little over a decade, the Alabama Crimson Tide and head coach Nick Saban were considered the standard in college football. Multiple titles, numerous playoff appearances, recruiting top-tier players, they did it all under Saban's guidance. But now that the legendary basketball coach is no longer coaching, everyone is looking for a new standard in the sport, and one college football analyst already has a candidate.
While Alabama has been the standard for a long time, an argument can be made that Georgia has been the standard since 2020. Two national titles, a conference title, an NFL Draft advantage, and not losing a regular season game since the 2020 season. For these reasons, college football analyst Joel Klatt considers Georgia and head coach Kirby Smart the new standard. Here's what he said:
“Even though Michigan was last year's national champion, I'd say Georgia is the new standard in college football,” Klatt said. “They're a program that's still going strong. A program that was recently crowned national champion and recently won 29 games in a row. They're close to getting back to the playoffs and trying to win three straight championships.”
Klatt went on to specifically reference Coach Smart as the standard: “At this point, Kirby? I think it's safe to say he's the standard in college football,” Klatt said.
The expanded playoffs this season give Georgia a continuing chance to win a national title, and with the Bulldogs consistently finishing in the top 10 under Coach Smart, it's safe to assume they'll be a top 12 team in the country in the near future, especially with there already being talk of expanding playoff spots in the near future.
They may not be on the same level as Saban's Alabama team, but who can replicate that? But with Smart in the team, the Bulldogs have a chance to dominate college football and build their own highly memorable dynasty that college football fans will talk about forever. That's easier said than done, though. Fans will find out this year just how difficult it is to win a national title in a new format.
