Georgia will host its annual spring scrimmage game this weekend at Sanford Stadium. The Bulldogs are heading into the 2024 college football season after falling just short of making the College Football Playoff last year. Despite losing 11 players to the NFL Draft this offseason, the Bulldogs still return a significant portion of their starters.
Georgia's spring game will feature early enrollees from the 2024 freshman class and some of the transfer portal moves they made over the winter. The Bulldogs acquired a total of eight players through the transfer portal and had 28 players in last year's recruiting cycle, one of the best in college football. Many new faces fans will get a chance to see for the first time on Saturday.
GDay Live Update:
First quarter:
- (15:00) The Reds go on offense first and get a first down on third and short court courtesy of Roderick Robinson. Beck then found Dillon Bell a few plays later and drove the ball past the 50-yard line for a significant amount of yards. Trevor Etienne then joins the passing game to keep the sticks moving, but the Red team is forced to settle for three points. If Peyton Woodring's kick is GOOD. (3 red, 0 black)
- (8:18) Black team offense takes over at 25 yards. First player Gunner Stockton connects with Anthony his Evans on a deep ball and brings the ball down the opposition 21 yards to his line. Andrew Paul took a carry to the 1-yard line and punched himself in on the next play.The putt is good (3 red, 7 black)
- (6:14) Beck and the Red Team take over at the 25-yard line. On second down, a short run by Robinson and an incomplete pass to Delp set up third down, and a pass to the right side of the field was missed by Beck to Lovett. The red team is forced to punt. (3 red, 7 black)
- (3:42) Stockton gave Reddell a short gain on second down, but KJ Bolden made a nice tackle on third down forcing him to punt. (3 red, 7 black)
- (1:25) Beck connects with Lara Thomas on the first play of the Reds' drive for a 4-yard gain. Etienne then got loose on the next play for a big gain, but was called back due to a holding call. Beck then connected with Lovett across the middle of the field, making it third and fifth. End of the quarter.
Second quarter:
- (15:00) The red team jumps on defense with numbers 3 and 5 and keeps the sticks moving. Etienne gets loose again and makes a big gain, taking it into the middle of the field. Beck connected with Delp in the middle of the field a few plays later, getting the ball to the 40-yard line. Moments later, Beck connects with Lovett to get the offense inside the 10-yard line. After a goal-line fade ball failed and was picked short by Roderick Robinson, Beck threw an interception off a tipped pass at the line of scrimmage. The black team takes over. (3 red, 7 black)
- (9:37) After an interception by Mikel Williams, Stockton and the Black team take up position deep in their own territory. However, nothing can progress as the red team forces a three-and-out to quickly get the ball back.
- (7:34) Beck fails to connect with Delp on first down and a holding call on second down puts the Reds behind schedule, but a nice throw from Beck and a catch from Colby Young keep the sticks moving. On the very next play, Beck found Lawson Lackey over the middle for an even bigger gain. Two plays later, Lara Thomas found space and got a first down. Beck and Lovett then connected again to drive it to the 2-yard line. A great back shoulder ball was caught by Colby Young for a touchdown. (Red 10, Black 7)
- (2:22) Stockton and the Negroes return for another series before the half and immediately start moving the ball down the field. However, the momentum stalled when the offense stalled and faced a fourth down at the opponent's 48-yard line. The offense chose to go for it, but couldn't convert as Stockton's pass slanted toward the line.
- (1:18) Beck returns and uses his legs for a sizable gain on the first play. Later, another pass was broken up at the line of scrimmage, but the defense was flagged for offside. Beck's next pass was intercepted by CJ Allen.
- (0:57) Stockton and the black team's offense returns to the offensive line. Some nice completions by Stockton moved the ball down the field. After true freshman Chauncey Bowens makes a short goal from the backfield, the Black team sends out a field goal unit. He's good at kicking. (Red 10, Black 10) Halftime.
Third quarter:
- (15:00) Stockton and the black team's offense come out to start the second half. The Red team's defense stopped the run on first down and sacked Stockton on the next play for third down. Stockton and Sacoby White fail to connect and the black team takes out the punt team.
- (12:20) Beck and the offense are back and Etienne gets a couple on the first play. Beck was unable to connect with Etienne and another ball tipped toward the line of scrimmage, forcing him to punt.
- (10:20) Colin Drake trots out for the next drive with the black team's offense. On third down, he attempted a deep shot, but the receiver couldn't quite wrap it up. The punt team returned in place of the black team, and the red team's offense resumed.
- (8:30) Stockton gets a turn on the lead team offense and finds R. Robinson on the first play, forcing a few guys to miss for an 8 gain. Lovett is then handed off in the backfield, but the black team does a good job of covering it and forcing it into third down. Robinson lets go and gets a first down. Immediately after that Andrew Paul got the tote and beat one point for a big gain and took the ball into the opposition half. Stockton tries to find Lara Thomas for a big gain, but can't quite get it to wind up. Punt appears on the red team. (Red 10, Black 10)
- (2:51) Stockton returns to the black team's offense on the next drive. The third down comes after a short run and a short reception by Reddell. Stockton then tried to connect with Michael Jackson, but the pass fell incomplete. A punt team will come out against the black team.
- (0:46) Beck comes out on the red team and Robinson gets stuffed on first down. Beck crosses the middle of the field and finds Arian Smith for a first down. (3rd time completed)
Fourth quarter:
- (15:00) Beck and the Red Team return to the field with new downs. Beck tries to find Young, but Dan Jackson intercepts the pass. Robinson then pushed Pyle forward for a decent gain on second down, making it a manageable third down. Beck then looked in Young's direction again, this time reeling it in for another nice gain and a first down. A few more nice completions by Beck pushed the ball even further down the field, and on third down Etienne was able to get over the edge, but fell just short of the first down mark. But on fourth-and-1, Robinson keeps moving his stick. After a delay in play and a short pass to Lawson Lackey, the Reds had another third down, but Beck couldn't connect with Young in the back corner of the end zone, giving them a fourth down and a field goal unit.kick is good (Red 13, Black 10)
- (6:54) Stockton returns with a black team. Stockton immediately connected with true freshman Nitro Tuggle for a big gain all the way to the opposing 38-yard line. Stockton then threw a touchdown to Sacoby White from about 20 yards out. The putt is good. (Red 13, Black 17)
- (4:59) Beck returns to the red team and connects with Andrew Paul for the first play of the drive, going for a short gain. Terrell Foster broke up a pass on the next play, and the ball from Beck to Anthony Evans fell just behind the middle on the next play. Red punts the ball away.
- (3:00) Stockton returns to offense and gets a first down on third media with a pass to Cole Speer. A few plays later, Joseph Jonah Adjonier was sacked on third down, forcing the Black team to punt.
- (2:18) Beck and the Red Team offense come out again, but fail to connect with Lovett on the first play. But right after that, he threw the ball to Etienne for a nice gain, putting him at third base and shortstop. The Black team's defensive line breaks up a pass on fourth down, and is forced into a turnover on downs just before an interception.
- (1:26) On the first play, Michael Jackson III makes a big gain and takes the ball to the 5-yard line. On the third point, Stockton went for Colton Heinrich in the end zone, but Jake Pope broke up the pass. The field goal unit came out and KICK IS GOOD. (Red 13, Black 20)
- (0:51) Beck comes back and gives Lovett strikes, giving him a big lead until midfield. Moments later, he sent a perfect pass across the sideline to Lara Thomas for another big gain that put him in scoring position. Lovett then pins the ball on the defender's back to reel in a touchdown pass from Beck. (20 red, 20 black)
- (0:27) Stockton and the Black defense are back for another series. Stockton found a decent gain on Mikael Jackson III with 16 seconds left in the ballgame, reaching the 40-yard line. Third and shortstop Stockton threw a near-perfect deep ball to Sacoby White, but he couldn't bring it in. The field goal unit came out and the kick was no good. (Red 20, Black 20 FINAL)
