MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The countdown is on until the start of the 2024 West Virginia University football season, with the season opener and home opener against Penn State on Aug. 31 fast approaching.
The Mountaineers won nine games this season and also won the Mayo Bowl at Duke University, and with most of their offensive line and several defensive playmakers back, coach Neal Brown's team will look to continue their success this fall.
Before WVU holds its first official practice to kick off the season, here's an overview of the Mountaineers' roster and coaching staff: This article will be updated over the next few days with previews of each position group.
Breakdown of the roster
Offensive Line
Though Zach Frazier has moved on to the NFL, there is still talent and experience in this group. Wyatt Milam is the latest in-state lineman to garner national acclaim as a multiple-time preseason All-American nominee. Brandon Yates will replace Frazier under center. The goal for this group is to continue what has helped WVU strive to become the best rushing team in the sport.
Defensive Line
Several players from that group were lost during the offseason, forcing head coach Andrew Jackson to reshuffle his roster for the second straight year. The good news for Jackson is that veterans Sean Martin and Edward Vesterinen return as key members of the team. Martin will wear a new jersey number this fall in honor of a teammate who passed away.
