The New York Islanders will look to keep their season alive when they host the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 4 of their first-round series on Saturday. The Isles are currently trailing at 3-0.
The Islanders lost 3-2 in a close Game 3 at UBS Arena on Thursday. Brent Burns and Dmitri Orlov scored in the first period, and Sebastian Aho's goal in the second period gave the Hurricanes a 3-1 victory. Pierre Envall and Brock Nelson scored, but the Islanders were unable to score the tying goal, even though the Islanders outscored the Canes 11-3 in the third period.
Captain Anders Lee said, “We've fallen short three times because of very small things throughout each game.'' “Regardless of whether you played well or not, or even if you didn't have a good night, there's another level you need to reach.”
The Islanders have a big mountain to climb if they are to get back into the series. Only four of the 206 teams have bounced back from a 3-0 series deficit, but the Islanders are leaving no stone unturned as they intend to focus their efforts on Saturday's do-or-die battle with a game-one-game mentality. You have no choice but to accept the challenge.
“We have a very resilient group here and everyone still believes we can do this,” Bo Horvat said. “We should. We've proven that all year long. Every time we've been counted out or counted down, we've found a way to overcome it. We have a great chance on Saturday. Yes, it starts with winning and moving forward from there.
Incidentally, the Islanders overcame a 3-0 deficit in the second round of the 1975 playoffs to win the series against the Penguins, making them one of only four teams in league history to achieve a come-from-behind victory.
