Florida State head coach Mike Norvell revealed at the beginning of Tuesday night's post-practice press conference that a trio of players will miss the remainder of the spring. The Seminoles will be without redshirt senior offensive tackle Robert Scott, redshirt junior defensive tackle Joshua Farmer and true freshman cornerback Jamari Howard for the next few weeks or potentially longer. There is sex.
Scott and Farmer continue to work toward their return from injuries sustained last season. Norvell expects both players to return for summer training and preseason camp. Farmer had thumb surgery after the ACC Championship and missed the Orange Bowl, while Scott had surgery this offseason after struggling to stay on the field the past two years.
“Rob Scott is going to be out for the entire spring. Josh Farmer is also going to be out for the entire spring,” Norvell said. “I fully expect both of them to be ready for summer training and things like that.”
Norvell said Howard went down during a recent practice and could miss significant time. Depending on his progress during rehabilitation, this injury could keep him out until the fall. This was an unfortunate fact for the early registrants, who had attracted attention during the first few practices.
“Unfortunately, Jamari Howard is going to be out for the rest of this spring and likely next season due to that injury. We'll see what happens in terms of availability. It was good, but unfortunately he got sick, so we'll have to see his rehab progress as he comes back. I just want to introduce the players who are going to be out for the rest of the spring, so we'll see how it goes. I’ll take a look.”
Scott is a veteran starting pitcher with a wealth of experience, having started 30 games during his career. He slumped for most of 2023 and even sat out last spring. Scott is an All-ACC talent when he's healthy, but that hasn't been the case lately. He's a true wild card who could lift the entire offensive line with his presence in the lineup, but you can't count on that at this point.
Farmer continued to grow over the years and became a rising star. He is coming off a season in which he recorded 32 tackles, seven tackles for loss, five sacks, one forced fumble, two pass breakups and was named second-team All-ACC. Farmer's best football is still ahead of him and will likely start alongside his friend and running mate Darrell Jackson.
Howard enrolled at Florida State University in January as a top prospect in the 2024 class. During his senior season, he totaled 50 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, one sack, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one interception. He was part of a highly touted defensive back class that also included four-star Charles Lester III, four-star Kai Bates and four-star Ricky Knight III.
Spring practice continues Thursday as the Seminoles prepare for their first scrimmage. Norvell, offensive coordinator Alex Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and special teams coordinator John Papuchis are scheduled to meet with the media, and NoleGameday will provide full coverage once the situation is resolved.
