The University of Memphis football team has acquired the top quarterback in the class of 2025.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis football has landed one of the biggest recruits in the team's history.
On Saturday afternoon, during an Instagram Live that also featured Atlanta-based rapper Quavo, four-star quarterback Antwon Hill Jr. (AJ), class of 2025, announced he would be committing to the Memphis Tigers.
Hill received offers from more than 30 schools but ultimately narrowed it down to Memphis and Florida, visiting in May and June.
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound quarterback will be entering his senior year at Houston County High School in Georgia. He is ranked as the No. 200 overall prospect and the No. 15 best quarterback in the class, according to On3 Industry Rankings. Hill is also the top uncommitted quarterback in the class of 2025.
Hill initially committed to the University of Colorado last year but then rescinded his commitment, opting to re-enter his recruiting hunt, allowing Memphis to pursue him.
With Seth Hennigan finishing his college career at the end of this season, Memphis will need a new starting quarterback heading into 2025. Hill could fill just that spot.
“You always want a guy at that position that can help you grow, but it's nice to have a veteran there,” Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield said after Hill's visit to Memphis. “Obviously, Seth is going to be gone, so it's, 'Hey, who's the next best guy?' You always hope that guy's on your team, but you have to explore all your options, whether it's the portal, recruiting, high school recruiting.”
Silverfield and Memphis are accustomed to starting true freshmen under center, and Hennigan did just that in 2021, maintaining his starting spot throughout his career.
The Tigers currently have three quarterbacks competing for the backup spot to Hennigan and hopefully the starter spot next year.
Memphis Football will kick off the 2024 season on Saturday, August 31st at 6pm at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
