Demons force a penalty kick, but fall short of Bloodhounds
WASHINGTON — Washington men's soccer's four-game unbeaten streak came to a halt Monday night with a 4-3 loss to Southeast Conference rival Fort Madison.
The Demons (4-1) and Bloodhounds (5-2) needed a penalty shootout to decide the winner after the Demons made a stunning comeback in the second half.
Washington had an early advantage in the SEC game, with Bill de la Rosa sliding into the net after a deep throw-in from Lane Schrock in the seventh minute.
That was the Demons' only goal in the first 40 minutes. Meanwhile, Fort Madison took advantage of that span to build a two-point lead.
The Bloodhounds clinched the game a minute after the Demons' first goal and scored two more between the 16th and 18th minutes to make it 3-1 at halftime.
Washington will not go down without a fight.
De La Rosa got Washington moving forward again. This time, with 36 minutes left in the second half, a miscue from the Bloodhounds resulted in a goal kick that was deflected and put the ball into the net.
Washington finally clinched the game in the 65th minute when Brian Arreola's shot hit the inside of the right goal post.
Both teams remained tied until the final whistle, with two overtime periods and penalty kicks required to determine the winner.
Washington went 4-of-5 in the shootout, but Fort Madison went 5-of-5 for a one-point lead and the conference victory.
With the loss, Washington falls to 2-1 in SEC play and will play Keecoku (0-5) on Thursday.
