JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – A former University of Southern Mississippi football player and Las Vegas Raiders player has announced his retirement from football.
Jalen Richard made the announcement via his Instagram account on Wednesday.
“Some doors just close on themselves and lock us out, but God has the keys,” his statement read in part, “But He has handed us new keys to open new doors. Words cannot express what playing this game has meant to me.”
Richard played for the Golden Eagles from 2012-2015, having his best season as a senior in 2015 when he ran for 1,098 yards and 14 touchdowns, which are tied for the fourth-most in a single season by a Southern Miss running back in USM history.
During his career at Southern Miss, the running back ran for 2,086 total yards, had 675 yards receiving and 24 total touchdowns.
The running back is a longtime Raiders player who played for the NFL team every season from 2016 to 2021. In his six-year NFL career, he rushed for 1,333 yards, received for 1,590 yards, returned for 1,632 yards and seven total touchdowns, appearing in two playoff appearances.
According to his post, he plans to explore football coaching opportunities after his playing retirement.
