About two weeks ago, Marcus Morris joined his third different team this season.
The veteran signed a 10-day contract and earned a tryout with the Cleveland Cavaliers as he explored a potential winning scenario. Morris' decision to join the Cavs came a month after his last game with the Philadelphia 76ers.
At this point, the Cavs are confident Morris can make an impact on the team heading into the 2024 NBA Playoffs. After defeating the Sixers on Friday night, the Cavs improved to 45-29 on the year. They are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference behind the New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Boston Celtics.
With his interim contract expiring, the Cavaliers announced ahead of Friday's home game against Philadelphia that they have officially signed the veteran to a deal that will keep him on the roster for the remainder of the season.
Morris was in his fifth season with the Los Angeles Clippers when the 2023-2024 season began. A few games into the year, Morris was part of a major trade. The Philadelphia native was excited to join his hometown team.
Morris will last 37 games with the Sixers. Morris averaged 17 minutes on the court during his time in Philadelphia, made seven starts, and scored seven points per game. He still proved to be an efficient shooter by draining 44 percent of his field goals and knocking down 40 percent of his threes.
On the day of the trade deadline, the Sixers used Morris and his contract as a means to acquire Buddy Hield from the Indiana Pacers. Morris was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in a three-team trade. Shortly after the deal was finalized, the Spurs waived Morris.
The veteran remained on the free agent market for quite some time. It was reported that the team was considering a partnership with the Minnesota Timberwolves, but that plan never materialized. Instead, he has emerged as the favorite to win the Eastern Conference as the Cavaliers aim to make the playoffs for the second straight year.
Morris, who played in 67 postseason games, brings valuable playoff experience to Cleveland.
