What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is an ancient Korean martial art developed 2000 years ago as armed self-defense. Taekwondo literally means:
Tei: Kick, jump, or hit with the foot
Kwon: Fist. To strike or destroy something mainly with the hand or fist.
Dao: A martial arts way or method.
The philosophy behind Taekwondo is that a practitioner must be able to instantly stop an attacker with a single blow or kick to a vital point. This philosophy is evident when observing a Taekwondo class or demonstration. The power and spirit generated is limitless. A Taekwondo practitioner maintains peace of mind by being confident in themselves without fear or intimidation.
Why did you start Taekwondo?
Most people study Taekwondo for self-defense, but there are many other reasons: physical strength, weight control, self-confidence, self-esteem, self-control, tension and pressure relief. Students who study Taekwondo feel confident that they are learning how to protect themselves, and this quiet confidence permeates into all areas of their lives: at home, at school, at work, etc. As students progress, they develop a greater sense of respect for themselves and others.
What are the benefits for young children?
Master Chung specializes in teaching young children between the ages of 5 and 13. The training these young children receive gives them great pride, self-control, self-confidence and self-esteem, helping to shape their personalities. In some cases, Taekwondo training can actually serve as therapy for children. For example, the confidence gained from learning how to defend oneself can turn a very shy and withdrawn child into a more outgoing and self-confident child, and a very aggressive child into a calmer and more respectful child towards others. These classes teach self-defense, increase self-confidence and greatly improve cooperation. Classes are tailored to children with short attention spans.
