FBI Deputy Assistant Director for Counterintelligence Jill Murphy and senior officials from the FBI's Houston field office will engage with members of the academic community and the Asian American community at a June 6 event hosted by Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy.
In 2022, the Department of Justice terminated the China Initiative, a strategy to counter Chinese espionage and threats to U.S. research security, after academic and civil rights groups raised concerns about bias and damage to the U.S. scientific enterprise. However, there have been several recent media reports of issues regarding the entry of Chinese graduate students and academic researchers who are green card holders or U.S. citizens.
The panel event will explore the gap between national science and technology policy and its implementation, as well as the possibility of establishing regular channels of communication between academia, Asian American communities, and FBI field offices.
