There were a lot of roster moves ahead of the March 8th NHL trade deadline. Some recommendations to consider this week include rookies who gained fantasy value after being acquired in trades. We'll also cover other players worth acquiring during their strong run.
As an honorable mention, fantasy managers looking for goaltending help should keep an eye on New Jersey and Vancouver. The Devils acquired Jake Allen (13% of roster) from Montreal and Kaapo Kahkonen (6% of roster) from San Jose in a trade deadline shakeup between the pipes. With Thatcher Demko available for the Canucks after missing Saturday's win over Winnipeg with an injury, backup Casey DeSmith (12% roster) has become an interesting target.
Teuvo Teravainen, LW/RW, Carolina Hurricanes (47% enrollment)
Teravainen has been strong offensively, posting four goals and seven assists during a seven-game winning streak. As a result, his enrollment rate is increasing at an accelerating rate. The 29-year-old winger has meshed well with Sebastian Aho this season, while Andrei Svechnikov has also been part of the trio. Teravainen bounced back from a disappointing 2022-23 season, but has been plagued by consistency issues this season. Still, with Carolina's hot play and busy four games this week, he has been a solid addition.
Anders Lee, LW, New York Islanders (34% enrollment)
Lee has been largely disappointing offensively this season, especially though he's shown plenty of consistency over the past seven seasons. However, he has improved recently and could be a valuable contributor in the future. Lee has four goals, four helpers, 27 shots and 21 hits in his past 10 games. He managed to stay on the score sheet despite being dropped to the second row and second power play unit. Lee's multi-category upside makes him an interesting addition, especially considering the Islanders are poised to play four times this week.
Casey Mittelstadt, C, Colorado Avalanche (29% enrollment)
Mittelstadt logged just 13 minutes, 56 seconds of ice time in Friday's Avalanche debut against Minnesota, but his minutes should increase as he adjusts to his new surroundings. He is on track for the best offensive season of his career with 14 goals and 47 points through 63 games. Mittelstadt's role in Colorado isn't all that different from the one he had with the Sabers before the trade. He centered the second line between Valeri Nichushkin and Jonathan Drouin and saw time on the second power play unit. Colorado has three games scheduled this week.
Alex Killorn, LW/RW, Anaheim Ducks (21% enrollment)
Killorn's scoring rate dropped significantly during his first campaign with the Ducks compared to his final two seasons as a member of the Lightning. That's not too surprising, but the Ducks probably expected more from the veteran forward after signing him to a hefty four-year, $25 million contract last summer. However, I have been doing better lately. Killorn has found the net eight times in his last 13 games, with two assists and 21 hits in that span. Killorn is on a four-game goal streak heading into a four-game road trip with Anaheim this week.
Evgeny Kuznetsov, C, Carolina Hurricanes (12% enrollment)
Kuznetsov's fantasy stock seemed to have cooled down after collecting just six goals and 17 points in 43 games with the Capitals. He then joined the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, cleared his waivers, and even went so far as to be assigned to the AHL to play for Hershey. Kuznetsov did not see much action in the minor leagues before being traded to the Hurricanes for his fresh start. In his Carolina debut against New Jersey on Saturday, he only saw 13:00 of ice time, but managed to make an impression. Kuznetsov made two shots on goal, won five of nine meetings and finished with a plus-1 rating in his first game since Jan. 27. On Sunday against Calgary, Kuznetsov was moved to the second line and his minutes increased to 16. Although he didn't score 38 points, he won 11 of his 18 puck drops. Still, if you shake off the rust, the attack should come. Kuznetsov is skating with top-level power play combinations and will likely be put in situations to succeed going forward. He might be worthy of a flyer, especially with the Hurricanes having four games scheduled this week.
Anthony Duclair, LW, Tampa Bay Lightning (9% enrollment)
Duclair was gaining momentum on offense before being transferred from San Jose to Tampa Bay last Thursday. He has scored eight goals and scored 12 points in the past nine games, making up the majority of the offensive line with four multi-point performances. He also recorded 27 shots and five power play points (three goals, two assists) during that period. Duclair had one goal and one assist in his Lightning debut against Philadelphia on Saturday. He skated on the second line in the contest with Steven Stamkos and Anthony Cirelli. Duclair also recorded time on his second power-play combination. Tampa Bay only plays two games this week, but the 28-year-old forward should be a solid pickup for the remainder of the 2023-24 season.
Jack Roslovic, C/RW, New York Rangers (14% enrollment)
Roslovic had four goals and 13 points in 12 games with Columbus before being traded to the Rangers before Friday's trade deadline. He heated up while playing alongside Johnny Gaudreau and Boone Jenner on the Blue Jackets' top line. Roslovic is expected to continue to play in all situations for the Rangers. He skated alongside Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider in his New York debut against St. Louis on Saturday. Roslovic also saw time on the second power play unit. The Rangers will play him five times this week, the most in the league, so feel free to pile on.
