LOUCEDALE, Miss. (WDAM) – Family and friends of Marcus “MJ” Daniels Jr. will say their final goodbyes during a memorial service to be held at his alma mater.
Daniels was just 21 when he was shot and killed on Tuesday, Jan. 11, while sitting in his car near his Hattiesburg apartment.
Local residents, along with Daniels' family and friends, quickly took to social media to express their shock and grief as they struggle to understand what had happened.
Many in the community knew Daniels from the football field, where coaches said he was a standout athlete at George County High School who played at Ole Miss before transferring to USM in 2023.
In an obituary posted by Moments Funeral Home, the family called him a “charismatic” and devoted son with a “great future.”
“MJ had an infectious smile that could brighten anyone's day,” the obituary reads. “His charismatic personality meant there was never a dull moment around him.”
Daniels' family will hold a memorial service on Saturday, June 22nd from 11am to 1pm at the George County High School gymnasium, followed by a funeral service. Afterwards, the family plans to bury Daniels in Merrill Cemetery.
