Following the success of Welcome to WrexhamFX now has its sights set on another Mexican soccer club.
The cable network and Disney Latin America have ordered a documentary series exploring the fortunes of Mexican soccer team Club Necaxa. Team owner Eva Longoria and Welcome to Wrexham The duo Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds. (Some Necaxa backers bought a 5% stake in Welsh club Wrexham AFC earlier this year, in response to a deal that gave McElhenney and Reynolds some stake in Necaxa.)
According to a description of the show, the series will follow Necaxa as they “try to reclaim their status as Mexico's top team while Mexican-American owner Eva Longoria tries to breathe new life into the team with the help of her famous friends, including new co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.”
Necaxa is based in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and plays in the country's top soccer division, Liga MX. Longoria is part of an ownership coalition that also includes major league pitcher Justin Verlander and his wife, model Kate Upton, former NBA All-Star Shawn Marion, and German soccer player Mesut Ozil.
The untitled series is bilingual and is produced by Longoria's Hyphenate Media Group, McElhenney's More Better Productions, Reynolds' Maximum Effort Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment. Welcome to WrexhamLongoria and hyphenate Chris Abrego serve as executive producers alongside McElhenney, Reynolds, Rachel Mendes, Nick Frenkel, Jackie Cohn, George Dewey and Alex Fumero.
