Founded two years ago, Ekon Shai Karate has fast become an integral part of Ramaphosa's district.
The club has 10 students and provides training at local churches that helps them embrace their mission of providing a safe and nurturing space for growth and development.
Shihan Moeti Holomo founded the Karate Club driven by his passion for martial arts and his desire to train others.
His almost 40 years of martial arts experience began at the Eddie Cave Kickboxing Academy in Cape Town.
He is now a central figure in community efforts to promote discipline, respect and personal growth.
Reflecting on his evolution from competitor to instructor, Holomo said he no longer fights but trains.
“This transition has enabled me to impart not only the techniques of martial arts but also its profound philosophy to my students.
“My extensive experience is a testament to my dedication and skill. I am trained in Karate, Kickboxing and Thai Boxing, demonstrating a diverse and comprehensive understanding of different martial arts disciplines.”
For Holomo, establishing the Ekong Shai Karate Dojo within a local church reflects his vision of creating a safe and welcoming environment for all.
“The church is not just a training center; it is a community hub where people of diverse backgrounds come together to learn and grow.”
“In Ekong Shai Karate, the emphasis is not just on physical training.”

Holomo embeds spiritual discipline and respect into every session, teaching his students the values of patience, humility and respect for others.
“My approach resonates with many people because I believe martial arts can be a powerful tool for personal growth.
“Training isn't just about learning how to fight. It's about building character and confidence,” he explains.
The classes attract a diverse audience, from seven-year-olds looking to learn self-defense to adults looking for a new fitness routine.
A hallmark of Holomo's teaching style is her ability to connect with students regardless of age or skill level.
His patience and encouragement create an atmosphere where everyone feels empowered to challenge themselves and strive to improve.
As Ekon Shai Karate continues to grow, Holomo envisions expanding the program to include more advanced training sessions and community outreach activities.
“I hope to inspire more people to embrace the discipline and benefits of martial arts.
“My goal is to produce champions, not just in karate but in life.”
