American steeplechase Emma Coburn says her “dream” of competing in this year's Paris Olympics is over after she broke her ankle while competing in Shanghai last month.
Cobain, a bronze medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics, landed hard during a water jump during the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Diamond League in China and withdrew from the race.
In an Instagram post on Thursday, she said she broke her ankle during the landing and underwent surgery to clean the cartilage and install screws in the joint.
“That means I won't be competing in the Olympic Trials,” Coburn said.
“The Paris dream is over. There's been *a lot* of heartbreak for me over the last few years, but damn, I love this sport and nothing heals a heartbreak like working hard and getting back on your feet. Later this year. See you again.”

Cobain competed in the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary last year.
Cobain said he thought he had just sprained his ankle, but the pain at the time was “pretty intense.”
“When I got home, the images showed ligament tears, cartilage damage, and a fracture in my medial malleolus.” [a bone in the ankle]'' the 33-year-old explained, adding that she could resume jogging within six weeks.
In addition to his bronze medal in 2016, Coburn owns two other World Championship medals: a gold medal in 2017 and a silver medal in 2019. She had hoped to compete in her fourth Olympics in Paris later this year.
The U.S. Olympic Trials will be held next month in Eugene, Oregon, with the Paris Games opening on July 26.
