ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – With the Elmira River Sharks season over, the question is which hockey or River Sharks team will return to First Arena?
About a month ago, Chemung County IDA Chairman Mark Margeson said, “Hockey will return to First Arena next season.”
However, the teams and leagues that will play there have not yet been decided.
When asked which teams would play in the arena or which league they would be in, Margeson said, “IDA does not have a definitive answer at this time.”
He also said multiple teams and leagues have been in contact, but the IDA is trying to find the team that best fits its financial needs.
He also said he hopes to get an answer to that question as soon as possible, but said he should get an answer by mid-to-late May.
Don Kernan, commissioner of the Federal Prospect Hockey League and owner of the River Sharks, also spoke on the phone with 18 News about whether the team will compete in the FPHL and remain in the rink. He said he was in discussions with IDA and said: “We are still working towards reaching an agreement and working towards a resolution.”
Mr Kernan said a decision should be made by the third week of May. An FPHL meeting will be held in Chicago at that time, and the schedule for next season will be announced shortly thereafter.
18 News will update you with new information we receive as these periods approach.
