Elena Makoedo scored her biggest win of the season on wrestling's biggest national stage.
The former North Central star defeated Iowa State's Kylie Welker 11-0 in the 170-pound division at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships after losing to Welker 11-3 in the National Duals finals a few weeks ago. It came in second place. Both games were the last deciding games for the Hawkeyes to win the team title from the Cardinals during the 2024 season.
Makoed got one point back at the Olympic Trials with a 6-4 victory over Welker in the 76-kilogram semifinals. The Orangevale, Calif., native scored the first six points of the match before Welker secured a takedown as time expired in the first period. The Hawkeye star got another takedown in the second, but Makoed defended and won. She will face Kennedy Blaze in the challenge tournament final for the right to face six-time world champion Adaline Gray in a best-of-three final.
