Hunter Johnson scored two goals to lead Edison to a 2-0 victory over Booker T. Washington in the boys Class 5A state soccer final Monday night at Hurricane Stadium, giving the Eagles 30 years in the sport. It was his fifth state championship overall. for the program.
Although the two Tulsa Public Schools programs did not meet during the regular season, they played like fierce rivals with solid defense throughout the game.
As seconds ticked down, the Edison student body poured onto the field to celebrate with their beloved team. But then they had to leave because the Penn State announcer told them to clear the field for the awards ceremony.
“It feels great,” Johnson said. “I can't believe it's here. We put in a lot of effort to get here, and all that effort paid off, and you know what happened? We won.”

Edison (17-1) suffered just one loss during the regular season, coming up against eventual 3A champion OKC Cassady on March 7 in just its second game of the season. However, the Eagles ended the season with 16 consecutive wins. Booker T. finished the 2024 season with a 12-7 record.
Johnson, a senior forward, had assists on both goals from Cooper, also a senior forward. With 13:55 left in the half, he scored the Eagles' first goal with a straight shot from 5 yards inside the box past Hornets senior goaltender Edwin Trevino. Edison led 1-0 by halftime.
“I kept my eye on the ball the whole time, and as soon as I saw him (Trevino) and saw the ball go in, I already knew that would be good for the first goal,” he said.
Johnson scored the insurance goal with 2:20 left in the game, scoring from the same distance as his first goal.
“I was just waiting for the clock to strike…I was just waiting for the clock to strike, and I knew at that point it was over,” Johnson said.
Booker T. tried to score many times, but couldn't get past Corcoran, who ended up making 10 saves.
“There was a split second in the second half where they got a little closer to the box and I was able to get down and grab the ball,” Corcoran said.
With 15:45 remaining, the Hornets took a free kick opportunity. The ball, kicked by junior defender Edwin Chavez, sailed far over the goal, moving like a soccer field goal, past the running track, and landed on the grass. Edison was awarded a free kick.
Chavez then took another kick and it crossed the goal, but it remained just a few feet above the goal.
