Promoter Eddie Hearn wants new signing Jaron “Boots” Ennis to focus on unification fights against other welterweight champions, leading to a big clash with Terrence Crawford.
A bout with Crawford is a big goal for Matchroom Boxing promoter Hearn for Boots (31-0, 28 KOs), but he will have to wait until he wins the remaining three belts at 147.
Mandatory defense first
“Yes, that is [a fight against Conor Benn] There I am, but I'm more interested in Cody Crowley for now, his duties. He’s got to get that out of the way,” promoter Eddie Hearn told the media when asked about Jaron Boots Ennis’ next fight with Matchroom Boxing Company.
The fight against Cody Crowley, a mandatory member of the IBF, could take place in Boots' hometown of Philadelphia in July if the fight goes through. Hearn did not say who his backup plan would be if Crowley refused the fight.
Hearn says Conor Benn is not a priority for Ennis. Conor is popular in the UK and would make money if he was allowed to fight there.
Focus on unification match
“I would like to make boots. [WBA welterweight champion Eimantas] Stanionis.I would like to make boots for [WBC interim 147-lb champion Mario] Barrios too. “I think there's a big chance for Boots to do a unification fight now, where there probably wasn't before,” Hearn said.
It remains to be seen whether the unification fight that Hearn wants for Boots will materialize.
For Barrios and Staminionis to have a dangerous fight with Boots, he will have to come up with a lot of money. Because they and their promoters know they are unlikely to win. Things might become easier if the Saudis were willing to hold Mr. Butt's unification struggle domestically.
Crawford vs. Ennis: The big goal
“Crawford, Spence, they all know how good Jaron Ennis is. If they can add other players into the mix and pay them well, they can get Jaron Ennis and I think he will fight, but he will be out in July,” Hearn said. . “We want to bring him back to Philadelphia and then I want to create a big unification for him.
“It ultimately leads to one of the biggest and best fights in sports, Terrence Crawford vs. Jaron Ennis,” Hearn said.
If Boots Ennis can't fight Crawford for two years, the Nebraska native will be nearly 40 years old and probably won't have much left. Crawford could retire, so we'll see if he's still around by then.
