Jalen Hurts is helping his high school rival in a big way.
Following the tragic death of a Houston high school football player, Hertz has decided to pay for the teenager's funeral. NFL Media reported on Tuesday..
Jahvon Coles, 18, a former North Shore High School football player, was shot at a party on the night of March 9th and was found by police unresponsive and suffering a seizure. Coles was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a local hospital after CPR was attempted.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the gunmen “deliberately fired” from about a block away in the direction of the house party Coles was attending, and that the suspects were driving a vehicle. He said he believed he left the scene. The suspect remains at large.
In addition to playing linebacker at North Shore High School, Coles was also a strong student. His grandfather told KHOU 11 News he had a 4.1 GPA and was accepted to 15 colleges. Coles recently visited Lamar University and was scheduled to play football there after being a two-time first-team all-district linebacker.
Coles' funeral was held Saturday. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Houston Mayor John Whitmire proclaimed the day the teenager was buried as “Jahvon Coles Day.” According to KHOU 11 News, Harts also sent a video message to his family prior to the funeral.
Hurts grew up near Channelview, Texas, and attended Channelview High School. North Shore is one of the border towns.
