Despite recently claiming he's “done” with a fourth fight with Conor McGregor, whom he has previously faced three times, ahead of their title bout at UFC 302 this weekend, Lafayette veteran Dustin Poirier maintains there's a slim chance they could face each other again in the future.
Currently ranked No. 3 in the lightweight division, Poirier is scheduled to return to action this weekend in New Jersey when he faces pound-for-pound No. 1 contender Islam Makhachev in the main event of UFC 302.
McGregor himself, meanwhile, is a former two-division champion who will end a nearly three-year absence from the Octagon when he returns to the welterweight division to face soon-to-be mutual foe Michael Chandler in the main event of UFC 303 at the end of next month.
McGregor, a former unbeaten lightweight and featherweight champion who hasn't fought since UFC 264, suffered a broken left tibia and fibula in his opening bout against Poirier, reportedly via doctor's stoppage.
Dustin Poirier worried about fourth fight with Conor McGregor
And after claiming before his return fight in Newark that a fourth fight against McGregor, whom he has beaten twice before, was out of the question, Poirier now says a rematch inside the Octagon, while unlikely, is still possible.
“If the stars align, it's possible,” Dustin Poirier said on ESPN Radio about a fourth fight with Conor McGregor. “But… [pointless] “I'm not even talking about boobs. I've had a rivalry with him for years and we've fought back to back in 2021. I'm getting ready for the week to fight for the undisputed belt and he's fighting the guy I choked out in our last fight.”
“It still feels like a long way off and a lot has to happen before then,” Poirier continued, “so right now I'm just focused on Islam Makhachev.”
Do you think Dustin Poirier will fight Conor McGregor a fourth time?
