The Warriors have struggled in the NBA the past two seasons, but Draymond Green believes the team still has the potential to win another championship.
Speaking with NBA forward Danny Green on “The Draymond Green Show,” the Golden State veteran explained that he is fully confident the team can field a competitive squad this offseason.
“I think there are some decisions that need to be made for us and I trust the front office and coaching staff to make the right decisions, but I think we still have a little bit of time to make it happen,” Green said, “and I know this organization will honor Steph.” [Curry] And me and Clay (Thompson). I know they'll give us every chance to help us win and they'll respect us that way. “[Thompson}Iknowthey'llhonorusinthatwaybygivinguseverychancetheycan'thelpuswin”[Thompson}Iknowthey’llhonorusinthatwaybygivinguseverychancetheycantohelpuswin”
Since beating the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA Finals, the Warriors have struggled to regain their championship form, losing in the second round of the 2023 playoffs and to the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament in 2024. In the meantime, injuries, suspensions and general poor performance have thrown the team off track, and now serious roster decisions will be made.
Thompson is set to become a free agent this summer, and Kevon Looney's contract situation remains in question. Keeping Golden State's core of Thompson, Curry and Green would be a great outcome, but it's difficult given the team's current payroll total. The NBA's new salary cap rules make it cost-prohibitive for teams to stay above the luxury tax threshold for an extended period of time. Penalties for big-spending teams like the Warriors would make building a championship team even more difficult.
Still, with the continued development of young stars like Jonathan Kuminga, Trayce Jackson-Davis and Brandin Podziemski, and a core of championship contenders like Curry, Thompson and Green, Golden State has the potential to be a championship contender again, but the road to victory will be just as tough as ever in a crowded Western Conference.
