Twelve years ago, the Dominican Republic had a chance to qualify for the London Olympics but missed out after losing to Nigeria in the second match. Now, the country has another chance to reach the big stage through the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
It certainly won't be an easy road for Nestor “Che” Garcia's squad, with Celtics big man Al Horford out after playing significant time in the NBA Championship run and Karl-Anthony Towns cut from the roster after reaching the Western Conference finals with the Timberwolves.
Still, this Dominican team has plenty of scoring power, with Kings forward Chris Duarte leading the offense along with the backcourt duo of Andres Feliz and Jean Montero. It's safe to say no team will take the Dominican Republic lightly this July. But is this team good enough defensively to finally qualify for the Olympics?

When are the FIBA Olympic Qualifiers?
- date: July 2 (Tue) – July 7 (Sun)
Countries participating in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) will begin group play this week, with the top two teams from each group then competing in the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals will then meet in the final round to secure a spot in the Paris Olympics.
Eight men's basketball teams have already qualified for the Olympics. The four OQTs will be the “last chance” for other teams to qualify. The four OQT winners (Greece, Latvia, Puerto Rico, and Spain) will join the eight teams already scheduled to compete in Paris.
