The Columbus High School girls soccer team returned home Thursday after traveling to Norfolk on Tuesday.
The Discoverers hosted Lincoln Pius X on Thursday and took an early lead, but lost 3-1 to the Thunderbolts.
“I thought it was a really competitive game. Both teams fought hard and the effort on the field from both teams was tremendous,” Columbus women's soccer coach Zach Wayman said. “At the end of the day, on some plays on offense and defense, they made more plays than we did, and that's what really matters.”
Columbus scored in the 10th minute on a shot from junior Charlie Playster off a throw-in set play by senior Karlie Gaedeke.
Pius X went scoreless until the 34th minute, tying the game at 1-1, and immediately added their second goal in the 37th minute to take a 2-1 lead at halftime.

The Discoverers fought off Pius' late shots early, with senior goalie Jordyn Trotta making several saves. Trotta finished the game with 10 saves and three goals allowed.
Columbus was in scoring position for much of the final 10 minutes with quality play from junior Abby Haynes.
“We started playing as a team again, trusting each other and doing our job,” Wayman said. “If you try to force it, it won't work, so we just let it take its course and we could see what happened. They sat in the back and we were able to put pressure on them, but in the end they I ended up playing more.” ”
The Discoverers' attempt to tie the score failed, and Pius won 3-1 with 1:19 remaining.
“Pius is a really good team. They have a lot of really talented players,” Wayman said.
With this loss, Columbus fell to 2-2 on the season. The Discoveries will return to action Saturday against visiting Bennington at 3 p.m.
“We're going to learn from this game and get better. It's only our fourth game, so we still have a lot of things to improve on,” Wayman said. “I want to see a team effort. People have to step up when they get a chance.”
